Qu Yuan was a loyal minister who loved his country deeply. But when he was falsely accused of treason, he was exiled. Heartbroken and unable to save his homeland, he threw himself into the Miluo River.
The local people admired Qu Yuan and didn’t want the fish to harm him. So, they paddled out in boats, beating drums and throwing rice into the water to distract the fish. This act of devotion became the origin of the dragon boat races and the tradition of eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings).
