Gardening or farming is perhaps one of the oldest activity man have learned to enjoy. It may not have been considered a hobby during the earlier days of human evolution but this still does not negate the fact that gardening has for long, served as an activity that helps man enjoy his leisure time and appreciate the nature that surrounds him. Some people find gardening a boring activity though while some can easily indulge into it as if it were a major league baseball. It is better to know the basic garden tools first if you want to find their vein in gardening.

We will discuss some of the most common gardening tools in this article.

1. Lawnmower - Every homeowner and gardener understands that they have to keep the lawn clipped back and looking good, but they also have to keep the grass down around their garden as well. So you can also have a good lawnmower sharpened for your needs.

2. Hand Shovel - When planting small transplants, a large tool is clumsy and is simply not needed. This is where a nimble hand shovel is perfect. Don't skimp and buy a cheap one or you will be bending it back into shape before long. Go for a solid metal frame that is built to last and won't bend. For planting tomatoes, peppers, or other transplants when they are still small, a hand shovel is in order.

3. Hoe - When it comes to planting, a classic hoe is just what is needed. These come in both a triangle shape and a rectangle shape. Opt for the latter to increase versatility without the need to own two tools that are so similar. The rectangle shape works great when held flat to mix up dirt and cut down weeds in summer, while it may be angled to create a shallow trough for planting seeds in rows.

4. Leaf Sweeper - If you have a large area of leaf debris to clean, you know that it takes a lot of muscle to move them by hand. When you have a leaf sweeper to work with, you can let the machine do the work for you and eliminate all those aches and pains that come with the manual task.

5. Edge Trimmer - The edge trimmer is one of the best gardening tools to have because it can be used to prune plants and cut hedges. You wouldn't want to do without this one when you have lots of landscape to take care of.

6. Spading Fork - Many gardeners use this tool to help them as they transplant from one garden are to another, or to aerate their garden area. You can also use it to apply mulch to the garden.

7. Mattock - When you need to break up clay soils or have to deal with roots and trees in your garden area, one of the best garden tools to have is the Mattock. It is more powerful than a hoe or pick and you will be able to get more done with it.
